Adriano Banchieri was a monk, but that didn't temper his explosive musical style or stop him from earning a reputation as one of the bad boys of late Renaissance music (he was described at various times as "L'enfant terrible," "The Dissonant One," etc.). Banchieri also had a wonderful secular sense of humor, and it shows in such madrigal-comedies as Barca di Venetia per Padova ("Venetian Boat bound for Padua"), a set of 20 madrigals for five voices composed in 1605 and then revised somewhat in 1623.
The story is simple: several Italians and one German are traveling on a boat from Venice to Padua. Banchieri's treatment of this plain story, however, is full of wit (and also much graceful music). The characters all speak in their own dialects/languages, and often the text runs in several simultaneous and barely related strands, much like a real-life conversation does. The text, incidentally, was apparently written entirely by Banchieri.
Near the beginning of the journey, the boatman recommends to the travelers that they decide on a pastime of some kind to make the voyage more pleasurable, and one of the passengers (specifically, a bookseller from Florence) suggests that the five best singers from their number entertain the others by singing songs by the composer Banchieri! So, for most of the work, the singers – who are selected by an audition held in the sixth madrigal of the set – sing madrigals. [Note that Banchieri has composed all of the "Banchieri madrigals" sung in Barca di Venetia per Padova from scratch – he doesn't reuse earlier material.] They finish some, but reject others as "too boring" (a wonderful touch of self-mockery). Banchieri uses the in-story madrigal singing as a chance to compose some madrigals in other composers' styles: Madrigals 9 and 10 are in the style of Gesualdo, Madrigal 14 imitates Marenzio, and Madrigal 15 is as Spano might have composed it.
Light touches abound. The German, who is now drunk, wanders off once into music of his own after the others have stopped singing (Madrigal 8). A lute string breaks in Madrigal 17 (the "lute music" is actually provided by the singers using empty syllables, and the string breaks when the first soprano makes a squawking sound). Two Jews enter the scene (Madrigal 13), and Banchieri provides some faux-Hebrew texts. As the travelers arrive in Padua (Madrigal 19), they give three cheers for Banchieri!
In 1623, for a new publication, Banchieri added an instrumental bass line to the original a cappella score.
