To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Amorphis, the band has re-recorded a selection of classic tracks for a special retrospective. Magic & Mayhem – Tales From The Early Years will be in stores September 17 and features songs originally released between 1991 and 1996.
These are expensive times for the die-hard Amorphis fan. July saw the release of the DVD 'Forging The Land Of Thousand Lakes', which is recommended by the way; and on September 17th there will be yet another opportunity to spend some of your hard-earned cash on your favourite Finnish metal act. The product is titled 'Magic & Mayhem', which should familiar, but that will probably apply to all the tunes present.
Finland's biggest metal export has selected thirteen songs from the earliest period of their career (1991 to 1996). Moreover, Amorphis re-entered a studio in order to re-record them, which is understandable. As you may or may not know, Amorphis have 'new' vocalist Tomi Joutsen in the band since 2005, but live the band still plays lots of older songs (cf. the aforementioned DVD). For a lot of recent fans it might just be more fun and more recognizable to listen to those songs at home in a Joutsen treatment instead of having to buy 'The Karelian Isthmus' (1993), 'Tales From The Thousand Lakes' (1994) and 'Elegy' (1996) with their former singers.
At the same time Amorphis have taken the opportunity to implement a couple of minor changes to the arrangements of the songs. This mainly means that the keyboard plays a slightly bigger role and it strikes me that the main riff in 'Against Widows' has been slightly tweaked and now sounds less sharp (which is the only significant effect in my experience). What I do not understand at all, by the way, is the inclusion of a terrible cover of The Doors' 'Light My Fire' instead of any other song. All in all this project has something interesting to offer for any Amorphis fan out there.
