This CD features four radical works from the last thirty years, each of which is a reinvention of the medium od the solo string instrument. In the hands of Salvatore Sciarrino the violin becomes a chimera, an almost bodiless reincarnation of its familiar self. In the hands of Manfred Stahnke the violin is retuned and made to resemble string instruments of other traditions, perhaps imaginary ones. And in the case of Georg Friedrich Haas, the pitch space of the octave, both on violin and viola, is exploded into a complex world of clashing tuning systems that strive, however futily, to achieve harmony. As Barbara Lüneburg’s title points out, this is music of ‘the refined ear’, sound worlds that stretch the imaginations of composer, performer and listener.
On a personal note, I might add one wonders how Lüneburg manages to play these pieces - especially Sciarrino's; sounding anywhere between twittering birds, ancient Asian flutes, ice rain and what not, the Caprices add another chapter to the history of violin virtuosity.
