Before salsa was born there was Son-Montuno and Guaracha. In the early 1940s, these sounds were all the rage in Cuban dance music, from which salsa eventually evolved. The Conjunto Casino has maintained these musical traditions for over half a century. Though younger players have replaced older ones, the band has remained dedicated to performing this authentic Cuban dance music. It is with this conservationist spirit that you should approach Montuno en Neptuno #960. Think of Conjunto Casino as a sort of Cuban version of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. It's a musical institution; what they play isn't fresh or new, nor is intended to be so. It's sort of a peek back into history. For this album, Conjunto Casino is fronted by 70-year old singer Jesús Navarro Jimenez. His passionate delivery is impressive and does much to focus the band's energy.01.
