Many of these compositions for the cello are quite interesting; but yes, they were typically written for students of the instrument. We hear an endless stream of exercises…I can see the poor youth pining away in his sparsely lit attic on a cold and wintry night, dark bags under his eyes; practising and practising, incessantly stroking and plucking away at the strings, because his cruel, unforgiving academy teacher demands he suffers for art.
And suffer he will. This is classical music. Art. Torture.
