In 1958 this quintet enjoyed an extended, 6-month stay at a left-bank club, Le Chat Qui Peche, during which time the concert recorded on this album took place (but not in the club). It's pleasant neo-bop but nothing exceptional, and it certainly doesn't acquire the fire and force of the live performances by the group, which was largely driven by Art Taylor's thunderous, explosive beat.

Look instead for the album by the Donald Byrd Quartet called "Au Chat qui Peche" (it's a quintet because of Bobby Jaspar, but the producers of the CD apparently couldn't count). The item is not available on Amazon.com, but an internet search should bring up a foreign distributor or two. While it doesn't fully capture the "presence" of the group in that small concrete cave, you'll definitely experience the interplay among the musicians and even between the musicians and the listeners in the club (of which I was one). For me the highlight of this very loose session (and there are many) occurs on "52nd Street Theme" ("I Got Rythm" changes at breakneck speed). After Walter Davis Jr.'s piano solo, the whole group lays out with the exception of Doug Watkins, who plays 3 masterfully constructed choruses of walking bass lines. Apparently the other members were too impressed to come in on time. They miss it after the 1st chorus, after the 2nd chorus only Byrd catches his entry, then during the 3rd chorus you can hear him hollering at the other 3 members of the group to listen up and count so he won't be left hanging out to dry on the next attempt at an out chorus. Music in the moment. ~ Amazon
