"A Saxon arrived in town today, an excellent harpsichord player and composer. He demonstrated his talents by playing the organ of the S.Giovanni church in Laterano, and the people were amazed". (Journal of Signore Valesio, Rome, 14 january 1707)
The recorded pieces provided here were most certainly created while Handel lived in Italy. It is yet unclear whether they were composed in Florence or in Rome. It is supposed that Lucrezia was written in Florence.
While today' s listeners consider Vivaldi and Corelli as the leading composers of the Baroque Era in Italy, Francesco Geminiani was seen as at least their equal by the audiences of the time.
Handel also made the acquanitance of Domenico Scarlatti (…) Besides his musical talents he was known to be an affable and jolly person.
