The 13-string arched harp, saung gauk, is a sweet-toned instrument. Today, most musicians add three more strings so as to increase the instrument's possibilities without reducing its authenticity. Although it was widely used in ancient times in India and later in Angkor, Cambodia, it has died out completely from those countries and survives essentially in Burma. With the passing centuries, its resonator has become broader and the number of strings (formerly seven) has been gradually increased. There is evidence of the harp on the monuments at Pagan and at Angkor in Cambodia (twelfth and thirteenth centuries), and in frescoes at Chien Mai in Thailand (sixteenth century). The strings are attached to a curving neck, usually decorated with a gilded lacquered scene, and run obliquely into the resonator, which is boat-shaped and decorated with sumptuous lac-quered inlaid motifs. Altogether, it is a magnificent work of art in its own right. Changes were made to the Burmese harp since the beginning of the century (addition of strings, improvement of the resonator) and made it the most refined instrument in Burmese music; the harp is difficult to play, and it is gradually being ousted by more powerful instruments, including the piano and the guitar. There are few young harpists, as attempts at electrical amplification give disappointing results. The harp is the solo instrument par excellence. Often used for vocal accompaniment, it may also be included in instrumental duets with the flute or the xylophone. But the craft of its manufacture, its history and its technical possibilities are such that the harp is considered by the Burmese to be their national instrument.
