Aheym is Dessner’s (b. 1976) debut as a composer, enlisting the California-based Kronos Quartet to lift his compositions off the page rather vividly. One of Aheym’s biggest strengths is how a quartet ... sounds so robustly full and rich. This is a major testament to the quartet’s masterful technique and cohesion as a unit. With Dessner at the helm, Kronos Quartet execute his pieces with majestic excellence, bucket-loads of character, and a precision that’s almost deadly.
The appropriately named title piece “Aheym” best presents Dessner’s approach: a dramatic opening, dark and insistent, then a breath, then an emerging melodic seed—informed by an Eastern-European sensibility but devoid of the kitsch and obviousness that inflicts itself upon so much neo-Jewish music. The seed ultimately grows as Dessner uses modular units that transform as they iterate, sometimes breaking down into sparse scratches or ethereal traces that always retain the thread, or building to a rousing climax with ecstatic swirls. In “Little Blue Something” and “Tenebre,” transparency is never sacrificed even as the density builds. The dramatic finale, “Tour Eiffel,” rings with a sweet melancholy, and rides rich vocal harmonies over Reichian motorics.

Even though this record is available elsewhare on the net, I thought it would be a good idea to share it here too, since it is so good. One of the best modern classical albums of 2013. Just listen to the heavy rock begining of Aheym, preferably at high volume! :)
