As the daughter of the celebrated-and equally controversial-soul singer Nina Simone, Lisa Simone has a lot to reflect on. My World finds her exploring motherly love, social harmony and plenty more with open-hearted honesty and an absolutely stunning voice. On opener “Let It All Go”, she vividly details her inner struggles over breezy coffeehouse guitar; she’s just as revealing on the brassy, upbeat peace offering “Unconditionally”. Whilst Simone has traded her traditional jazz style for something more fluid and earthy here, it’s no less soulful-head to the bluesy, subdued “Expectations” to hear her really find her depth.
