Lustmord - Purifying Fire (2000)

Full of echoes, deep dark droning tones, noise and sounds (some of which sound vaguely like, or are, classical instruments) which weave and spiral in and out of caverns and voids…This music breathes and broods… culminating in an organic tapestry of nature and electronic combined. This can be music to disappear into, and although some of it can be disturbing and dark (as in song 4 Black Star - it contains something which sounds vaguely human/monster-like…imagine the heartwrenching cries/groans/howls of a creature which has lost the one thing which meant everything to it), this music is beautiful.

PURIFYING FIRE is Soleilmoon's welcome roundup of latter-day Lustmord rarities and artifacts. "Strange Attractor," a stolen breath of Precambrian atmosphere, first surfaced (if that word even applies to something so Stygian) in 1996 as an instantly covetable 12-inch. B-side "Black Star," a mesmerizing collage of sonic terrors, appears here as well. The rest of PURIFYING FIRE finds Williams playing against type, striving for austere beauty rather than shudders. "Permafrost," reworked from a 1995 piece, is ageless chamber music fit for the courtyard of the Old Ones or the coronation of pharaohs. "Deep Calls to Deep" and correlative remix "Deep Calls to Dub" are superb samples of the uplifting mode so memorably attained on STALKER, 1995's Robert Rich/Lustmord masterpiece. Another salvaged compilation contribution, "Of Fire & Ice" unexpectedly crosses from desolate windscaping into the neoclassical drama of Univers Zero. Recorded between 1995 and 1998.
