Mark Polscher (1961 Dortmund, Germany) has studied bassoon, given concerts as a saxophonist and flutist with international jazz and rock bands across Europe, directed various ensembles, taught classes at music schools and has managed his own record label. In addition, he has created music for five hundred sequels of a daily television show, contributed as a studio artist in numerous record and broadcasting productions and has recorded and released many of his own works. Polscher studied with Joe Mubare and Karlheinz Stockhausen.
Since 1990 Mark Polscher has composed and produced over 80 theatre and film music scores. Most of these commissioned works are also available in concert versions and are to be found in the repertoire of various international ensembles. According to his theatre work, since 1998 most of his compositions have been created as Scenic Music with electroacoustic accompaniment. In 2000 his opera Die Mechanische Braut (The Mechanical Bride), the second section of his four
piece cycle "Die Mechanische Braut", had its first performance in Darmstadt. Automatik, "towards a comprehensive model of change" and "Brautlieder" (Songs for the Bride) were premiered between 2001 and 2003 in Munich, Dresden and Cologne. The entire five hour work has been released on CD. Since 2004, as the result of close collaboration with choirs and vocal ensembles, Polscher has composed and directed various orchestrated vocal works: Haus Leib Schuld (House Limb Fault) for a cappella choir and electronic music, has been used in the 2006 movie production "Kroll" for the Zeitgenössische Oper Berlin. From 2010 to 2012 Polscher composed two ballets for orchestra and electronic music specially commissioned by the Staatsoper Hannover.
Currently, Polscher is working on a new opera as well as on his new CD The Pomegranate Tree (marc aurel edition 2013). Polscher complements his concert commissions and studio work by giving lectures and workshops as well as writing essays on music and related interests.
Chilly music; but then, as Polscher himself says in the booklet, “I don’t want to entertain”. After two listening sessions I can say this is quite inventive stuff, especially towards the end.
