The composer as echo sounder – that is a lovely and perhaps truly appropriate image for Matthias Pintscher’s work of recent years. He has left behind the often cited and well-trod “power of the poetic”, the “imaginary theatre” of the 1990s, and turned to new ways of posing problems, to circles interested in association and inspiration, which is why the introduction of the text appears initially perhaps somewhat idiosyncratic but on second glance is most definitely located at the actual focus of interest. The dark room full of shimmering grey, the gradual groping one’s way, various levels of indeterminacy – Matthias Pintscher’s coordinates are “space” and “colour.” Composing in chromatic values has largely displaced narrative, what was previously applied with a rather forceful stroke, in the new works is noticeably finer, reduced, simplified in the sense that the complex is more transparent, but does not seem less intricate.
