Did you also nearly choke on your bong water when you heard the news about that Yob called it quits? Maybe you even wiped away a little green tear? You didn’t? Well shame on you and bring yourself up to date with their last album ‘The Unreal Never Lived’ before you read any further. The rest of the YOB-loving side of humanity should consider themselves a bunch of lucky bastards because by these means I can inform them that band leader Mike Scheidt is back again, he just changed the name of his doom-gang into Middian.Tracklist:
After the bass-beast Isamu and drummer Travis left, Scheidt thought it was only fair to declare death to YOB as a band name. Luckily for his fans this is the only part of the band that is truly dead, because to say that with Middian they have radically changed their course…not really. The five songs all last close to or way over the ten-minute line, the tempo is slow as syrup and Scheidt’s high squeals and deep grunts are still as brutal as ever. Stoner doom like only one band can make these days, or should I say two now…
Just to be accurate, there are some striking differences between ‘The Unreal Never Lived’ and ‘Age Eternal’. If the last YOB album was at times psychedelic in a mantra kind of way and overall just extremely slow and incredibly heavy, with Middian the focus is much more on the dynamics between soft/hard and slow/fast(er). Opening song ‘The Dreamless Eye’ and also the fourth track ‘The Celebrant’ almost make you think of a spaced-out Mastodon, while the other songs all start out with a clean intro to later burst out into a mud-tsunami of doomed stoner violence. Also the clean vocal parts of Scheidt have gained more presence which makes the songs more recognizable; although you still don’t have to worry you’ll say Middian at ‘Top-Of -The-Pops’ soon. All in all this is a wonderful record for every metal fan and an absolute must-have for fans of rough doom with lots of stoner fumes. The YOB fan base can have a breathe in relief, now the wait starts for a European live show! Rating: 89/100-lordsofmetal.nl
