    Percy Sledge is more satisfying in small doses, so the mere nine cuts on this CD are no big bugaboo. The big-voiced Alabamian gets a little tiring on larger compilations because of the lack of variance in the cadence of his songs. He's a combo deep soul/country/Southern soul singer with a percentile breakdown of 40 percent deep soul, 40 percent country, and 20 percent Southern soul. Yet, the cross and blend of these styles doesn't overcome the same-o, same-o feeling of his recordings. A good CD if you just want a taste of Sledge and an easy way to find "When a Man Loves a Woman" when you need a refresher. Also includes "Warm and Tender Love" and a rendition of Otis Redding's "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay."
    These are rerecordings. Percy's voice is as good as every on these. The instrumentation is noticeably different, much brighter and sounds far less muddled that the originals. His voice is more prominent on these too. That's my opinion, your mileage may vary. I'm not saying these are superior to the originals, I am just stating my personal observations and you decide if you want a copy. Download is free, money refunded if not satisfied. This is another of my cheap CDs. Very cheap!
