    The Strategy of Shock: What Art Can Do. Rolf Riehm's Hamamuth — City of Angels and Who Are These Children

    Hamamuth — City of Angels (the piano work premiered in 2006 at the Darmstadt Summer Courses) and the piano concerto Who Are These Children (premiered three years later during the Donaueschingen Music Festival) must be counted among the most important artistic works of the last decades to attempt to expand the spectrum of political music. In the case of Hamamuth — City of Angels, the composer was concerned to react as an artist to the omnipresence of violence during the Iraq War. Riehm says at the beginning of his detailed introduction in the score, "It has to do with contemporary impressions. City of Angels refers to the pictures of devastation coming from Iraq which were constantly on television at that time. This approach was continued in Who Are These Children — and considerably expanded through the inclusion of text. However, in order to do justice to the intensity and singularity of these two works, it seems advisable to set aside these aspects and concentrate on their unusual sound world.
