Sadao Bekku (b. 1922) began his studies at Tokyo Imperial University, where he majored in experimental physics. While always interested in music, he did not formally begin study until winning a national prize for one of his compositions in 1948. Encouraged by his early success, Bekku would travel to Paris in the early '50s to study with Milhaud and Messiaen. The French influence would dominate his later works, both aesthetically and in the francophone titles he would give his works. His first two symphony (out of a total of five) date from 1961 and 1975 respectively and are written in a broadly late Romantic idiom, reminiscent of early Messiaen or Florent Schmitt, but having a distinctive rhytmic drive. As with many Japanese composers of his generation, Bekku would write numerous film scores, arguably the most famous being the music he wrote for the Japanese cult/Sci-Fi film "Attack of the Mushroom People."
