Call me a sexist, but a female on vocals triggers my attention vehemently, because of the mainly testosterone laden community of doom metal and stoner rock. For example, I can't wait for the new Acid King, and The Devil's Blood is of course a personal favorite. Another great female vocalist is of course Jinx Dawson from Coven fame (now there's some vinyl you would like to get your hands on). The same thing I said about the duration of albums in Conan's Horseback Battle Hammer review goes for this release: clocking in just over thirty minutes, this is a perfect listening time. I don't like the album art that much (it has a certain Jade Tree Records feel to it) but who's complaining when the music is awesome? Not me.Tracklist:
As influences, they cite: Kyuss, Brant Bjork and the Bro's, Queens of the Stone Age, Tool, Dozer, Colour Haze (see their myspace). Colour Haze is easily discernible because of the warm sound of the guitars, and some of the tracks have that jam session feel to it, just like Colour Haze's (although Sahara Surfers is 'lighter' in style qua jamming sphere). Queens Of The Stone Age is also a clear influence, since the tracks follow maybe a certain structure not unknown to QOTSA songs (especially from their 'golden' album, and Rated R). Early Tool is what I like, and certain riffs (combined with the bass) do sound a bit like these great forebears of, of what exactly? Great music I guess.
Colour Jam opens up nice and warm, like a Brant Bjork song, but the female vocals give a whole different feel to it. Julia Überbacher has a nice natural voice and after one minute and a half, things get loose. This is stoner rock we all love, and Julia's mesmerizing lyrics bring this first one to a happy and heavy end. Continuing with Propellor, the band moves up the tempo a notch. This 2nd track is more in your face, and a tad more aggressive than the first one. The guitar, bass and drums form a very fine canvas for the singer to paint her lyrics one, and before you know it, you have arrived at track number three: Age. Slowing it down a bit, a bit Toolesque in its structure and building, this song meanders between slow and heavy. 812 could have been written by Kyuss or Karma To Burn, and Sister In Shade sounds pretty cocky and self-assured. Closer Gas, spanning over a little more than nine minutes, opens up slowly and get's delightedly heavy within two minutes. Oh wait, the track is not nine minutes actually, there's a hidden track!
One very funny blurb on their last.fm: "desert rock for wet moments." I have no idea what this means, but I like it!! I like the fact that they hail from Austria too, since I don't have any conscious recollection of actual music from Austria. Originated in 2007, 2010 sees their debut, and I can imagine a fine musical future for these driven Austrians. Out since June 2010 and currently unsigned, Sahara Surfers' first one can easily make your day!
