When Screeching Weasel broke up the first time in 1989, bassist Dan Schater and drummer Brian Vermin hooked up with three friends and started the new band. Sludgeworth has gotta be one of the most underappreciated and underacknowledged bands to ever come out of the Chicago music scene. Part of it was timing, part of it was the fact that they never hooked up with a decent record label and part of it was the band's differences over musical direction - differences that eventually split the band up.

In 1991, they recorded an album, "What's This?" for another local label and again, poor distribution and weak advertising doomed the record to local notoriety. On their only tour in May of 1992, they played to mostly empty clubs. At the same time, as evidenced by the flip side of the "What's This?" LP, some of the band members were pushing the music in more of a funk direction, while others wanted to stick with the power pop sound that had made them local heroes. Unable to resolve the age old "musical differences" dilemna, the band recorded two songs for a 7" called "Brightside", released it themselves and split up in the fall of '92. Schafer went on with the newly reformed Screeching Weasel and, later, the Riverdales. The rest of the guys stuck together and formed Pound, a band that incorporated more of the funk riffs that are in subtle evidence on "Angry Man" (listed here as previously unreleased. Actually, different, inferior versions of "Angry Man" and "Follow" were on the first Sludgeworth single, as were different versions of "Someday" and "Two Feet On The Ground"). Still, until the end of their three year existence, their audience remained loyal; Sludgeworth's influence on many of our bigger local bands today is undeniable, and for good reason. Listen and you'll hear an updating of the better mid-eighties Chicago power pop bands combined with influences ranging from Screeching Weasel and Jawbreaker to early Samiam. Regardless of those influences, the result was wholly original and, as evidenced by the popularity of similar bands today, maybe just a little ahead of its time.

This album truly represents the best of Sludgeworth's output. Listen and hear for yourself what had all the Chicago area kids singing along in the early part of this decade. You can bemoan the fact that you weren't around to see 'em. Sludgeworth remains another good one that got away. Ain't that the way it always goes…

~ Ben Weasel, from the booklet note
