Very rare recording of Teddy Charles. Available for the first time on CD. This was one of Teddy Charles’ groups, and one that turned out to be very exciting. The much-needed ripping voice was Idress Sulieman’s, the subtle pulsing voice Teddy’s. The cooking was contributed neatly by Art Farmer and Jerry Segal. Mal Waldron is another thing: an excellent backgrounder, and a declarative voice in the foreground on solos.
One of the first modern Vibe players (i.e not in the Hamp mode) thsi is a small group effort on the level (IMHO) of a Mulligan Baker session.It is West Coast cool in every sense of the word.While Idrees Suleiman is not a West Coast player per say (his playing is a bit hot here) the rest of the band with Mal Waldron on keys,Addison Farmer on Bass,Jerry Segal on Drums this is jazz that has that West Coast sound down.Long OOP since it was on the small Elektra label it's a fine addition along with "Evolution" to his large ensemble Lp's like "Tentette".TRACKLIST
