The Elegants is an American doo-wop vocal group, that was started in 1958 by Vito Picone, Arthur Venosa, Frank Tardogno, Carmen Romano and James Mochella in South Beach, Staten Island, New York. Before their nursery rhyme inspired song, "Little Star", became a number one hit, spent 19 weeks in the Billboard Hot 100, earning gold disc status.
The Elegants are usually regarded as a one-hit group ("Little Star"), which they were, but that doesn't mean that they didn't deserve to have other charting singles – even "Getting Dizzy," the B-side of that one hit, wasn't a bad number, and the ballad "Please Believe Me" ought to have done something for them as well. Their entire history – going back to their mid-'50s origins as Pat Cordel & the Crescents (who sounded like Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers) and forward to their valiant but vain attempts to compete amid the British invasion – is contained here, in very good sound, too; the tapes have apparently been CEDAR-ized for noise reduction and the results are impressive.
