Klaus Schulze's Wahnfried - Trance Appeal (1996)

Klaus Schulze fans will know this has been around for quite a while, having been released last year. Just in case anyone doesn't know, Richard Wahnfried is actually a pseudonym for Klaus Schulze. I'm not a Schulze aficianado so I don't know the precise details behind this situation. Probably something contractual, but no matter. It's Schulze at the helm. Having been so impressed by 'Are You Sequenced?' and 'Dark Side of the Moog 5' I am now approaching Schulze's work with renewed enthusiasm. His difficult, self indulgent, esoteric phase seems to be fading to be replaced by music with more substance, drive and (most importantly) appeal. This album does nothing to dampen this view. Rhythmically and sequentially there are some really strong sections on show, with many lending an ear to the ambient/techno genre though the best for me is the more traditionally EM based 'Esprit Sans Frontieres' - a towering sequential romp. Texturally Schulze explores symphonic, choral, industrial, minimalist and bizarre avenues - most with significant success. Some of it doesn't really click for me, but thankfully the 45 minute slog syndrome doesn't even get a look in on this album. Short and sweet (relatively) is the order of the day and it's a lot stronger for it. For me the aforementioned 'Sequenced?' and 'Moog 5' albums take precedence over this release, but if you've already got these and fancy indulging yourself with a little more Schulzian style then give this a go.
