The traditional Vietnamese Court Theatre called hat Iuong or hat boi was codified towards the beginning of the fourteenth century and, since the nineteenth century, has become a popular theatre, especially in the South. Hat b6i troupes t our from village to village, giving performances in makeshift halls to a wide audience. To a superficial observer, this type of theatre may be considered similar to the Chinese, due largely to the theme of the plays, often taken from the period of the Warring Kingdoms in China, to the conventional colours of the make-up, to the falsetto voice used for both male and female roles, as well as to the stylized costumes, gestures and attitudes of the actors . Upon closer view , however, the details are very different, from the types of voices to the thickness of the soles of the buskins, or to the sleeve movements. In the musical field above all, the instruments, the manner in which they are played, as well as the repertory of songs and exclamations, are all totally different from anything to be found in the Chinese theatre.
