At a time when new releases of Bruckner on “major” labels are rare, DG should be commended for publishing Muti’s B2 with Strauss’ Der Bürger als Edelmann, even if it rode the coat-tails of a performance at the Salzburg Festival. The Nowak edition is in use. The pizzicato episode - a genuine momentum-killer - makes an appearance at 13’52” in the finale.
Buoyed by the Berlin Philharmonic in the Jesus Christus Church, Muti has a triumph to his name: his B4 – and it took a revision on my part to recognise his accomplishment – and even then, it’s more sunny than radiant. His B6 of similar vintage is crude. Nor is his recent Ninth Symphony anything special. Competence in Bruckner is his norm. Equally, I cannot hear anything special in Muti’s B2, inoffensive though it be (and one can only laugh at DG for including four minutes of applause at its conclusion). Infinitesimal delays are minimal – presumably born out of Muti’s commitment to textual purity. It’s so obvious in the Scherzo where his phrasing is stiffer than rigor mortis. It’s almost obligatory at this point to mention the B2’s Schubertian ancestry as if that provides a get-out-of-jail card for Muti or anyone else for that matter. There’s more than geniality to Bruckner’s Second Symphony; evidence of such an upside is spasmodic in this performance. The sound is somewhat airless (to wit, there’s no bloom to the strings at 2’14”ff in the first movement and the climax at 12’36”ff in the finale is constricted).
