Much of the fighting during the First World War took place on Belgian soil. The German invasion of Belgium was a major military event that started on August 1914. It marked the beginning of the First World War on the Western Front.
In the early days of World War One, the German Schlieffen Plan was to march through Belgium as part of their strategy to win the war. On August 5, 1914, the German army launches its assault on the key industrial city of Liège in Belgium, violating the country's neutrality and beginning the first battle of World War I. The Liège was in Germany's 'invasion corridor' at poorly defended section of the French frontline.
The Germans did not expect the Belgians to put up much resistance; however, events did not quite turn out that way. The small Belgian army held up the German advance, giving Britain time to move an expeditionary force across the Channel.
The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) fought its first battle at Mons and the invincible German army was brought to a standstill in Belgium. This film traces that first month, the battles of Liège, Antwerp and Mons. In reconstruction it uses the words of those who took part and looks at the remains of the battlefields and the fortifications that still exist.
