It was a bumper year for Britain in 1953. The Queen celebrated her coronation; the Ashes were won; the world air speed record was regained from the Americans; Stalin had a stroke; and Edmund Hillary, who died earlier this month, conquered Everest. Tonight’s documentary was broadcast originally to mark the 50th anniversary of the achievement, which includes material filmed on the expedition that had never been seen before alongside interviews with the surviving team members. It pays tribute to the erstwhile beekeeper, polar explorer and philanthropist – a man described by Jan Morris as “the quintessential man of action” about whom no one had a bad word to say.
