Orchestrating My Life is a clever title for an album where Rick Springfield revisits his catalog with the assistance of a 60-piece orchestra. It's a common move for veteran artist, but Springfield resists the easy impulse to make an easy listening record. Instead, he pumps Orchestrating My Life up with big, loud guitars that intentionally echo the arrangements of his original hit singles. Perhaps such a move was inevitable, as so many of his big hits – "I've Done Everything for You," "Don't Talk to Strangers," "Jessie's Girl," "Affair of the Heart," "Love Somebody," "Human Touch" – are melodic power pop fueled by massive hooks, the kind of album rock that needs its riffs as a support; remove the guitars and the whole edifice collapses.

The album, described by Springfield, as 20 new songs stylistically somewhere between "Working Class Dog" and "Tao". Sonically, the album sees Springfield returning to his first love of guitar-based power pop and keyboards, while lyrically featuring his favored subjects of love, sex and death. "My goal was solid three- minute tunes with the biggest hooks I could come up with." As Springfield explains, "the album is called 'Automatic' because the songs just kind of came out on their own."

Rick Springfield released the big, bold Songs for the End of the World in 2012, just before he received a boost in credibility from Dave Grohl. The Foo Fighters leader featured Springfield in Sound City, his 2013 feature-length love letter to classic rock, and while its accompanying soundtrack wasn't a smash, it did help shift the conventional wisdom on Rick Springfield. Now, he was celebrated for his power pop and arena rock, two things that helped him land a plum role in Jonathan Demme's 2015 film Ricki and the Flash, where he played a puppy dog foil to Meryl Streep's aging lead. Springfield knocked his role out of the park, allowing himself to be vulnerable and funny, two qualities he sometimes avoids on record. Happily, Rocket Science – the 2016 album that is his first since the great Rick renaissance of the 2010s – finds the rocker acting looser than he's been in years, letting his gift for the frivolous sit alongside his yen to explore his spiritual side.

Like fellow Aussies the Sherbs, Zoot never escaped teen-star status. But as Zoot Locker proves, they were certainly adapt at churning out clever pop tracks. Because of their time period, Zoot used every trick in the psychedelic book; but most songs maintain the three-minute mark, resulting in shrewd and skewered singles much like the Move delivered. Innocent innocuousness such as "Monty & Me" about walking the dog or "One Times Two Times Three Times Four" seems unfairly buried in the past. Of course, Beatles nods abound, such as the Lennon-isms of "Hey Pinky." With this smoking version of "Eleanor Rigby" the quartet attempted to jettison their early "pink" image, jumping aboard the bizarre "heavy covers" bandwagon with Vanilla Fudge and Rare Earth. The Hollies are another pervasive influence ("Flying" shares rhyme schemes with "Dear Eloise" over a "Helter Skelter" riff) while "Mr Songwriter" echoes the Byrds by way of Dylan. "Freak" foreshadows "Highway Star" and many Sweet moments.

Although Rick Springfield's music was frequently dismissed as vapid teen idol fare, his best moments have actually withstood the test of time far better than most critics would ever have imagined, emerging as some of the most well-crafted mainstream power pop of the 1980s. A singer-turned-soap opera star-turned-singer, Springfield was born Richard Springthorpe on August 23, 1949 in Sydney, Australia, to a military man; the family moved around Australia and England a great deal during Springfield's childhood, and he sought his escape from the difficulty of making friends in books and music. He formed a band in high school and eventually joined a '50s revival group called Rock House, moving on from there to join the teenybopper band Zoot in 1968. Zoot became one of the most popular groups in Australia until 1971, scoring several hits.

Following Springfield's success in the early '80s, these tracks were dusted off and the musical portions were re-recorded to make them sound more hip and modern. Originally from 1978, these cuts don't benefit much from the makeovers. But Beautiful Feelings does boast a piece of great novelty in the form of its opening truck titled "Bruce," in which Rick Springfield laments about how his last name sounds so much like that boss of a rocker named Springsteen that everyone is mistaking the two, even Rick's own mother! A minor Top 40 hit, it propelled this rather plain album into the charts along with it. Get it for the track "Bruce" alone, because that is one song that you should hear.
