Early in 1967, CBS released the original version of this album under the title "Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers." Perhaps it was ahead of its time. Gene Clark and his producer and friend Jim Dickson weren't happy with it either. When they learned that CBS planned to re-release the album (feeling that perhaps now its time had come), they decided that all of the original eight-track recordings should be re-mixed and at least some vocals re-recorded. After a week in CBS L.A. studios, where it all began almost six years before, they emerged with an enormously improved, almost totally different album. Nearly all of the vocals were re-recorded, tracks were brightened, parts buried in the original mix were brought up (in some cases completely changing the sound of the cuts), and in re-sequencing the order of the sides they even removed one song, Elevator Operator, because with five years' perspective they felt strongly that the song did not measure up to the others.'

Innovative, whimsical, lyrical, and leader of Spanish contemporary school, Luis de Pablo is one of the major figures in living music. Awarded countless prizes, international commissions and solo programs, his work gradually detached itself from any and all influences, finding in the use of non-European musical traditions an original source of inspiration. The eclectic composer wrote : “The birth of this CD (and the collaboration between the NEM and I ranks among my best experiences of the last few years.[…] I also witnessed several of my works ……..

It is good news that this unique work is now available on CD. It is, in many ways, of its time; the late '70s. It should appeal both to World Music devotees and to people who have enjoyed such music as Stockhausen's 1968 STIMMUNG (TUNING) for 6 vocalists and sound projection. The notes are very comprehensive; Luis de Pablo characterises his Poem of Wood as "a long meditation with no sense of direction"; the conductor describes it as one of de Pablo's masterpieces, "a calm, reflective journey through the Basque landscape". This 1992 studio recording made in Madrid is a great success.

On this disc, Richard Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra play string works by Edvard Grieg. The ACO perform perennial favourites such as the Holberg Suite and the two Elegiac Melodies, Grieg’s own orchestrations of two of his best-loved songs: Last Spring and The Wounded Heart.

Made during World War II, this chronicles a voyage of a U.S. submarine on a secret mission to the very shores of Japan. Much of the film is spent developing the cast of characters that populate the sub.

Playing the 1716 Booth Stradivari, violinist Arabella Steinbacher plays Johannes Brahms’s three Violin Sonatas, as well as the Scherzo he contributed to the FAE Sonata, with a prepossessing tonal command, captured and reproduced by PentaTone’s engineers, who have balanced both performers close up yet communicating a sense of the venue’s spaciousness (the recording took place in September 2000, at the Concertboerderij Valthermond). In the Vivace ma non troppo of Brahms’s First Violin Sonata, Steinbacher mixes strength and tenderness, exhibiting a wide dynamic range that the recorded sound has transmitted to the listeners. Robert Kulek’s introduction and accompanying figures at the second movement’s opening also reverberate warmly in the ambiance underneath Steinbacher’s sound, especially thick and honeyed in these passages (even at times recalling Mischa Elman’s fabled tone).
