While Jonathan Richman has recorded for lots of different record labels over the years, both big and small, any fan of his music has to acknowledge the smarts and vision of the tiny Berserkley label, who for many years before the notion of "indie rock" had gained currency were willing to give Richman and his unusual (many would say "strange") musical perspective free rein at a time when he sounded not eccentric but downright freakish. Roadrunner, Roadrunner: The Berserkley Collection culls most of the high points from the five albums Richman and the various versions of his group the Modern Lovers recorded for Berserkley in the 1970s, from the bracing proto-punk of the first Modern Lovers set (recorded in 1973, but unreleased until Berserkley took a chance on the tapes in 1976) to the willfully child-like songs and structures of 1979's Back in Your Life. Offering healthy samplings for each album, this set does an admirable job of tracing the evolution of Richman's style through his first decade, as he moved from teen angst into an innocence that might seem fey if it weren't so passionate and sincere. If you're looking for a detailed introduction to Jonathan Richman's formative era, Roadrunner, Roadrunner hits all the high points, and does a fine job of summarizing a vital era in the life of an influential artist. And just try to imagine what his music and career might have been like if Warner Bros. had actually released that Modern Lovers album they recorded in 1973.

Two CDs. Hot Wax Records was a soul and R&B record label founded in 1968 by the legendary songwriting and production team Holland-Dozier-Holland after their departure from Motown Records. Alongside Invictus Records (their other imprint), Hot Wax allowed them to continue creating music independently, with full creative and financial control. • Hot Wax specialized in vibrant, richly produced soul music with a strong pop sensibility - very much an extension of the signature Motown sound but often edgier and funkier. It became a major player in early 1970s R&B. • Some of it's most notable artists and releases include Honey Cone ("Want Ads," "Stick-Up") The 8th Day ("She's Not Just Another Woman") Flaming Ember ("Westbound #9"). This collection bring together all the most treasured singles from the Hot Wax label. • Includes in-depth liner notes by acclaimed writer and music historian Stuart Cosgrove.

Latin Jazz has been an important and evolving current in jazz since the mid-1940s, when Dizzy Gillespie invited the legendary Cuban conga drummer Chano Pozo to join his big band. However, Latin rhythms were present in jazz even earlier, as proven by such recordings as Louis Armstrong’s 1930 “The Peanut Vendor” (a reworking of Cuban pianist and conductor Moisés Simóns’ “El Manicero”). Even such an iconic jazz piece as W. C. Handy’s 1914 “St. Louis Blues” has a habanera-tresillo bass line. Latin Jazz would gain prominence in the 1950s and 1960s, with such celebrated figures as Ray Barretto, Cándido Camero, Tito Puente, Bebo Valdés, Pérez Prado, and Mongo Santamaría. Many American artists, such as Gerald Wilson, Quincy Jones, and the aforementioned Dizzy Gillespie, even composed their own Latin songs, as did pianist Herbie Hancock, whose “Watermelon Man” became a hit after being recorded by Mongo Santamaría. This 3-CD set compiles some of the genre’s finest performances.

After making his mark in the late '60s as one of Jamaica's brightest young instrumentalists, playing drums and guitar on sessions for Studio One operator Coxson Dodd, Filberto 'Fil' Phil Calender worked on sessions for many of the island's leading producers. He also found time to form The In Crowd, which by the latter half of the '70s provided the primary outlet for his considerable talents as both a musician and songwriter. Surprisingly, much of the band's output, including the 'Natural Rock 'n' Reggae' album have remained unavailable since originally being released on vinyl - an oversight that has finally been remedied with this triple disc set which comprises the entirety of their work from 1977 to 1984.

Born William John Evans on 16 August 1929, Bill Evans is widely considered to be one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time and is considered by some to have been the most influential post-World War II jazz keyboardist. Evans' use of impressionist harmony, inventive interpretation of traditional jazz repertoire, block chords, and trademark rhythmically independent, "singing" melodic lines continue to influence jazz pianists today. Unlike many other jazz musicians of his time, Evans never embraced new movements like jazz fusion or free jazz. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, Evans was classically trained and studied at Southeastern Louisiana University. In 1955 he moved to New York, where he worked with bandleader and theorist George Russell. In 1958, Evans joined Miles Davis' sextet, where he was to have a profound influence. In 1959, the band, then immersed in modal jazz, recorded Kind of Blue, the best-selling jazz album of all time. In late 1959, Evans left the Miles Davis band and began his career as a leader with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian, a group now regarded as a seminal modern jazz trio.
