    Né en 1889, Frans Masereel est un artiste belge, fortement marqué par les deux guerres mondiales. Pacifiste, antimilitariste, humaniste, il fréquente l’intelligentsia européenne de l’entre deux guerre, illustrant de son style inimitable des textes d’Emile Zola, Stefan Zweig, Thomas Mann… Ami du peintre allemand George Grosz, il commence à publier ses « romans en gravure » en 1918, en Suisse, et ne cessera, jusqu’à sa mort en 1972, d’utiliser la gravure sur bois comme moyen d’expression privilégié.
    Art Spiegelman a reconnu l’influence majeure du travail de Masereel dans la création de Maus.
