Most Scarecrow dictionaries are the works of single authors, but more than 450 individuals contributed to this one covering the "history, organization, structure, beliefs, and activities" of the Salvation Army. The entries are followed by nine appendixes listing, among other items, the ranks and designations of the army and "the first-ever published list of the more than 425 men and women who have attained the rank of Commissioner." Editor Merritt was himself a Salvation Army officer.
