    It is difficult to separate the three integrals of Beethoven's cello and piano works recorded by Pierre Fournier, with three prestigious Beethoven partners: Arthur Schnabel (1947-48), Friedrich Gulda (1959) and Wilhelm Kempff (1965). Fournier and Gulda it's a little water and fire. The French cellist guides the indomitable and lonely Gulda who will admit to having learned rigor during this recording and who will keep throughout his life a debt of gratitude for Fournier. The result is prodigious mutual listening, clarity of purpose and expression without artifice or emphasis.
