Kai Winding & Dino Piana - Duo "Bones" (Remastered) (1979/2025) [Official Digital Download 24/48]

It is characteristic of the best independent labels to know how to seize the opportunities that arise. Duo“Bones”, a studio session recorded on November 17, 1978, conducted by trombonists Kai Winding and Dino Piana, also belongs to the list of opportunities seized. The former, Danish by birth and naturalized American, was in Europe on a tour. In Rome, Winding met again with an old friend, Dino Piana, a very talented valve trombonist and member of RAI (Italian Radio and Television) Orchestra.

Reproposing the formula with two trombones, in some way a tribute to the legendary formation composed of Winding himself and J. J. Johnson, was a tempting opportunity. It would have been a real shame to let it slip away. Having obtained Winding’s approval to create an album with Piana, Alberti immediately worked to find a rhythm section that could adequately support the two trombonists. The choice fell on Enrico Pieranunzi, already considered one of the best young Italian pianists at the time, Giovanni Tommaso, double bass player who had recently returned to jazz after the international success with the jazz-rock group Perigeo and Tullio De Piscopo, an acrobatic drummer and authentic Parthenopean “groove machine”.

Unlike most sessions, in which the common ground for musicians is often that of standards, classics were only used three times: On Green Dolphin Street, This Is All I Ask and Get Out Of Town. The rest of the repertoire consisted of original pieces. Duo “Bones”, Lady H and Stop Following Me are signed by Winding, Kai And Dino is signed by Piana, while Soul Dance is signed by Pieranunzi.
