On March 7, 2005, Marius Müller-Westernhagen's album "Nahaufnahme" (Close-Up) was released and debuted at number 1 on the German charts, where it remained for two weeks. It was certified gold for over 100,000 units sold. The album was produced by Dieter Krauthausen, Jay Stapley, and Westernhagen himself, and recorded at Mark Angelo Studios in London. The cover was photographed by Karl Lagerfeld. On this album, Westernhagen combines the songwriting passion of his early albums with the virtuosic, yet never intrusive, musicianship of his predominantly British band.

Songs about love, about relationships, happy or failed, about life and his perspective on it—Marius Müller-Westernhagen has never sounded so relaxed and so completely at ease. On his new album, "Nahaufnahme," his qualities as a singer-songwriter reach unprecedented heights. In fourteen tracks, he explores the world of emotions and passions, not at breakneck speed, but thoughtfully and with a keen eye for the more delicate stirrings. With over thirty years of career behind him and a bit of life experience under his belt, Westernhagen appears on his 22nd album both masterful and forward-looking, ready to experiment. The new compositions sound fresh and artfully natural.

"Close-up" – the title seems like the original idea for this album, so perfectly does it suit its open, personal character, yet it only came about after all the recordings were already on tape. The opener, "Attempt to Remember," sets the tone for the entire CD: an inspired band comes together and, grounded by a swinging rhythm section, creates a captivating atmosphere with acoustic guitar, Fender Rhodes piano, and the warm tones of a flugelhorn. In the funky "You Can't Escape Me," a heartbroken man threatens, his emotions torn between hot tears and pagan rage.

He's already been through it, the one who confidently declares in the song "Eins": "And if you don't want to understand me / That's your problem, not mine / Because I am at one with myself." Whether it's about forgiveness, as in "Willst du tanzen" (Do You Want to Dance), or the anxious question "Liebst du mich" (Do You Love Me), Westernhagen and his musicians repeatedly lead the listener into new sonic landscapes and find poignant lyrics for the various states of love. The piano-accompanied ballads "Alles ist möglich" (Everything Is Possible) and "Mit dem Rücken zur Wand" (With My Back to the Wall) are deeply moving. In waltz time, the loser Georgie is laid to rest, and the bluegrass song "Gejammer" (Lament) takes stock of a relationship: "the beautiful chemistry is stone dead." The album concludes with the epilogue "Solange wir noch leben" (As Long as We're Still Alive), in which Marius Müller-Westernhagen formulates something like his credo as an artist and as a person.
