Cecilia Coleman is truly one of jazz's best kept secrets! This CD not only features Coleman's increasingly distinctive piano improvisations and seven of her diverse and complex originals, but it is the recording debut of her dynamic quintet. Soft-toned trumpeter Steve Huffsteter and harder-edged tenor saxophonist Andy Suzuki offer contrasting solo styles, while bassist Dean Taba and drummer Kendall Kay do not just accompany the lead voices but push them to come up with forceful statements. Although she is generous in allocating solo space, the main star throughout is Coleman. Her tricky yet melodic originals cover a variety of moods and force Huffsteter and Suzuki to play at their most creative level. Whether it be the somber "Somalia," the vintage Blue Note sound of "The Real Thing," or an up-tempo version of Bud Powell's "Celia," virtually every track on this impressive release by the sublime Cecilia Coleman is memorable and beautifully recorded! ~Scott YarnowTrack listing:
