The pioneer Guitar Quartet founded in 1968 by Jorge Martinez Zarate and reinvented in 1994 by his wife, Graciela Pomponio.

Martinez Zarate Guitar Quartet - Cuarteto Martinez Zarate

Created in 1968 by Jorge Martinez Zarate and his wife Graciela Pomponio (when they were already a world-renowned guitar duo), and their students Miguel Angel Girollet and Horacio Ceballos, the Martinez Zarate Guitar Quartet was one of the pioneer ensembles of this type in the Americas, inspiring the creation of many other quartets in the following decades. Their repertory was based on transcriptions of Renaissance and Baroque composers, complemented by 20th century works by Argentine composers, such as Alberto Ginastera, Maximo Pujol, Martinez Zarate, and Astor Piazzolla, some of them transcriptions, and others original compositions for guitar quartet. As Girollet and Ceballos left the quartet and Martinez Zarate died in 1993, Graciela Pomponio decided to gather some of her best students in order to keep the quartet alive. She was joined by Claudio Magnano, Hugo Zamora, and Jorge Labanca, and they recorded this CD in 1994. The quartet has performed in many countries, but received another blow in 2007, when Graciela Pomponio passed away. Her former student Osvaldo Parisi joined the quartet shortly after.
