Orange Goblin’s first ever live album, complete set live at Bloodstock Open Air Festival, 11th August 2012
I wasn’t in England for the Bloodstock Open Air Festival this past August, but after having this album in constant rotation over the past week or so, I can definitely testify that Goblin does in fact bring the heavy metal, and the crowd does indeed go crazy. A Eulogy For The Fans: Orange Goblin Live 2012 is a double-disc package that makes it a must-have for Goblin fans. The first disc contains the audio of the band’s complete set at Bloodstock, and disc two contains the video footage from both of their Bloodstock and Hellfest sets from this past summer, a documentary, short film and other promo videos. But let’s get back to the music. Since 1995, the British boys in Goblin have been cranking out a brand of down ‘n’ dirty riff-heavy metal that’s so conducive to relentless headbanging that one has to wonder how they don’t have a massive following on this side of the pond. For the uninitiated, throw on “Ballad of Solomon Eagle.” It rules, right? Now listen to the Sons of Anarchy theme song. Tell me which tune better suits a show about gun-running, whiskey-chugging motorcycle madmen: the one where the singer roars with a Lemmy-like rasp over a heavy blues metal riff that careens along like a freight train fueled by beer and cigarettes…or the one where the old dude strums an acoustic guitar and croaks about a crow flying straight? That’s what I thought. The Bloodstock set understandably features a bit more from their stellar 2012 studio album A Eulogy for the Damned than their other recorded output. The slow ‘n’ low sludge-doom anthem “The Fog” is a personal favorite and sounds great here live, but Goblin digs up enough of their back catalogue throughout the album’s 12 tracks that it practically doubles as a makeshift greatest hits collection. From the straight ahead Southern rock ballad of “Time Travelling Blues” from the 1998 album of the same name to the rollicking wah-heavy rocker “Quincy the Pigboy” from 2000’s The Big Black, Ward and company roll down memory lane one catchy riff after another. Sure, the live recording can sound a little muddy at times, but it suits Goblin here just fine. You want technical perfection and crystal clear live sound? Go nerd out to Dream Theater or something.
