From the notes: Until the last years of his circumscribed life, Hans Rosbaud lived and worked within a geographical triangle that had Graz at one corner, Aix-en-Provence at the other, and Frankfurt-am-Mein at the apex. His zeal on behalf of twentieth-century music was far-reaching, however, just as his excellence deserved bigger posts that the ones he chose….. Rosbaud was a notable advocate of music that other conductors tended to neglect or overlook after their first performances, and beyond that was a consistently diligent, profoundly insightful interpreter.

Here we have two great musicians joining Rosbaud in these performances recorded in Baden-Baden. Maria Bergmann was an in-house pianist at SWF and she championed works by modern composers, as well as classical repertoire. A CD of her Haydn Sonatas made us aware of how many good pianists are employed by radios, such as as Sudwestfunk in Baden-Baden, and are left forgotten. Maria then joins Rosbaud in Bartók's Sonata for 2 pianos and percussion. Rosbaud was administrating the broadcasting station and she was his right hand pianist. In Paul Hindemith's Violin Concerto we have the champion of XXth Century repertoire: Ivry Gitlis. You may remember his reading of the Stravinsky Violin Concerto. A great version given by an artist who refused to fit in with the music establishment. He disagreed with Ormandy and never returned to play with Philly, for example! A true loss.
