Although still thought of by some as one of the “young turks” on the Chicago blues scene, Johnny B. Moore has more experience than many “grizzled veterans”, with over a quarter century as a professional and countless recording sessions under his belt. This talented and versatile guitarist has previously lent his talents to Delmark releases by Willie Kent, Bonnie Lee and Karen Carroll; Troubled World is his second release for the label as a leader; his first was Live at Blue Chicago. With his Mississippi roots and solid commitment to Chicago's West Side blues sound, Johnny B. Moore has much in common with Johnny Littlejohn and Magic Sam - two of his mentors. Like those artists, Moore's blues is hard-edged, quirky, and beautiful. Troubled World captures him at his best.

Johnny B. Moore is steeped in the full and rich legacy of a delta bluesman. The biting aggression Muddy Waters, the powerful attacks reminiscent of Howlin' Wolf, slide guitar techniques such as he had-edged whine of Elmore James and the careful melodic drone of Robert Nighthawk are all embedded into Johnny B.'s style. It is a rare moment whenan actual Chicago blues club performance is captured on tape. Johnny B.'s Live At Blue Chicago will rank amongst the very best of them.

Chicago blues mainstay guitarist Johnny B. Moore delivers more raw electric energy on Rockin' in the Same Old Boat. Working a similar approach to many of his recent Delmark releases, Moore covers a wide swath of stylistic territory, from old-style Southern classics like Blind Lemon Jefferson's "Matchbox Blues" to more contemporary covers like Samuel Maghett's "Lookin' Good." Moore's hard-driving lead guitar lines are well intact as is his off-hand, sometimes slurred vocal delivery. This can be a jarring aesthetic combo depending upon your blues tastes, but shouldn't dissuade longtime fans from enjoying the proceedings.
