STUNNING 1986 SHOW FROM NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE • In July 1986, Neil Young released his 15th Studio album, Landing On Water. Recorded without Crazy Horse and to little great acclaim, the record only reached No.46 on the Billboard chart. But young re-united with the mighty Horse for the subsequent tour and his next record Life. • And while Landing On Water was generally considered to be lack-lustre, the tour was anything but. Performing only a couple of numbers from the recent release, set-lists were made up from NY classics and tracks from recent releases, largely resulting in a number of shows considered by fans to be some of the best Neil and Crazy Horse ever performed. • And when the band’s tour bus pulled up outside The Market Square Arena in Indiana, on 23rd October ’86, one such show was about to take place. Among the best gigs of the whole tour, the concert was broadcast across local FM Radio, and remains a live spectacular, even 35 years since it was performed. • Now released for the first time on this 2xCD set, fans are now able to share in a stunning concert by Neil Young and Crazy Horse, previously unavailable.

The first disc from El Concierto Español, the orchestra founded by the violinist Emilio Moreno (who is both a founding member of Frans Brüggen’s Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century and a great champion of Spanish music) is dedicated to one of the most important composers of the 18th century in Spain, Francisco Corselli. Of Italian origin, Corselli spent a considerable part of his career working for the Spanish court, to which he brought the opera seria which was enjoying so much success elsewhere in Europe at the time.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, Johann Sebastian Bach never intended to compose flute sonatas or partitas in sets of 6 or 12, as was customary at the time (and as he himself did for violin, cello and harpsichord). Bach's flute sonatas evolved over a roughly 30-year period between c.1717–1747 as he encountered the different types of flute in fashion at the time, and met several greatly skilled flautists. The question of which flautist and flute makers Bach may have known played a decisive role in choosing the programme on this recording. In preparation, Frank Theuns compared and assessed the playing qualities of various early eighteenth-century flute types.

The winner of numerous prestigious prizes, including several Gramophone Awards, the vocal ensemble Vox Luminis, founded by Lionel Meunier in 2004, is now regarded as a benchmark in the interpretation of the great works of German Baroque music. Its unfailingly faithful and lively approach to such masters as Bach, Buxtehude and Scheidt has made the group’s reputation, but this new recording features a major work by Heinrich Biber, a composer hitherto absent from its discography: his Requiem in F minor for 14 voices, composed around 1692. The programme is completed by two sacred works by Christoph Bernhard (Herr, nun lässest du deinen Diener in Friede fahren and Tribularer si nescirem misericordias tuas), two pieces by Johann Joseph Fux, and the Sonata a 6 in A minor of Johann Michael Nicolai.

Swan Hennessy is a real discovery for lovers of impressionistic piano music from France. Swan Hennessy was born in Rockford, Illinois, of Irish origin and grew up in Chicago. Swan Hennessy's music before 1900 was heavily influenced by his conservative education and his teachers' predilection for the music of Robert Schumann. Around the time of his move to Paris, he also been an admirer of Max Reger. Although his later music shows the influence of several contemporary stylistic directions, he never shook off this profound influence of the German Romantics.

Most of us love to be scared and back in the 1950s, horror and the rock and roll beat was an irresistible combination. Bands took their names from the fiendish creatures up on the big screen and their inspiration from what was going on in the films themselves. Vampires, lycanthropes, zombies, demons had the kids literally jumping out of their seats in fear and were of course perfect subject matter for songs. Here is a selection of primal, raw, often humorous numbers from the first time around, now all consigned to rockabilly hell that deserve to be re-heard and rediscovered. They won't just have your toes a-tapping, they'll also make your knees go weak and send a tingle right down your backbone!

The album offers a historical journey through music, depicting scenes of ancient Chinese hunting, mountain spirits, palace sorrows, and wine festivities. Traditional instruments such as the bone-whistle, guqin (an ancient Chinese string instrument), and bianzhong (bronze bells) are used to create an authentic atmosphere that evokes the spirit of early Chinese civilization.

The Essential Journey is a compilation of songs from the rock band Journey. Released on October 16, 2001, it is part of Sony BMG's "Essential" series of compilation albums. The album includes most of Journey's major and minor hits that have charted on Billboard Hot 100. It covers material recorded while Steve Perry was lead singer of the band, from 1978's Infinity to 1996's Trial by Fire, neglecting Journey albums recorded before and after his membership. The first disc is Greatest Hits with some minor changes: tracks are in a slightly different order, "After the Fall" replaces "Be Good to Yourself" (which is on the second disc instead), and "When You Love a Woman" is included (this song was recorded after the release of the original edition of Greatest Hits, but was added to the 2006 CD edition). The Essential Journey was certified as Platinum in the United States on February 2, 2005, and Double Platinum in the United States on March 3, 2016. It had sold 1,156,000 copies in the US as of August 2013.

Over nearly four decades and twelve albums, Sigh have been an unparalleled force, pushing the envelope in the avant-garde and black metal genres. The Japanese outfit have continually redefined themselves and confounded expectations throughout their career, beginning with the extreme black metal of 1993’s Scorn Defeat through to the more progressive work of the past few years. Amidst their discography, Hangman’s Hymn (2007) stands out - a tour de force of thrash metal loaded with classical influences and instrumentation…

The Heart of Chicago 1967-1997 is a greatest hits album by American rock band Chicago and was released in 1997. It was compiled to commemorate the group's 30th anniversary of their formation. The idea was to bridge their two eras - the James William Guercio/Columbia Records period of the 1970s and the David Foster/Warner Bros. Records period of the 1980s - on one CD. In addition, the band added two new songs, "The Only One" produced by Lenny Kravitz - a big fan of Chicago, and another, "Here In My Heart" by James Newton Howard. Both of these new tracks were successful in the adult contemporary market; "Here In My Heart" topped the AC charts, and "The Only One" was a top 20 AC hit.

The debut Jefferson Airplane album was dominated by singer Marty Balin, who wrote or co-wrote all the original material and sang most of the lead vocals in his heartbreaking tenor with Paul Kantner and Signe Anderson providing harmonies and backup. (Anderson's lead vocal on "Chauffeur Blues" indicated she was at least the equal of her successor, Grace Slick, as a belter.) The music consisted mostly of folk-rock love songs, the most memorable of which were "It's No Secret" and "Come up the Years." (There was also a striking version of Dino Valente's "Get Together" recorded years before the Youngbloods' hit version.) Jorma Kaukonen already displayed a talent for mixing country, folk, and blues riffs in a rock context, and Jack Casady already had a distinctive bass sound…

The Book of Secrets, the follow-up to 1994's The Mask and Mirror – there was a Christmas EP, A Winter Garden, released in 1995) – finds Loreena McKennitt in the same musical vein, mixing Celtic, Spanish, Italian, and new age to create her own distinct sound. The only problem is that she did not seem to progress much during the time between releases. This is not necessarily a bad thing, since she still knows how to write incredible melodies and layer instruments to produce peaceful images. "Night Ride Across the Caucasus" and "Dante's Prayer" are just two prime examples of this. And she continues her practice of setting classic poetry to music (Alfred Noyes' "The Highwayman").

Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy Clark, and drummer Mel Lewis, and three originals contributed by each of the two leaders, everything gels nicely, though several tracks took more than three takes (in spite of liner note writer Nat Hentoff's assertions) to reach their final form. Mulligan contributed the gorgeous ballad "What's the Rush" (where he sat back to enjoy Hodges' solo and never plays his own horn), the easygoing swinger "Bunny," and the brisk cooker "18 Carrots (For Rabbit)," the latter which its composer would revisit with his Concert Jazz Band. The veteran alto saxophonist contributed the low-key ballad "Shady Side," the sassy blues "Back Beat" and "What It's All About," another potent blues…
