This Czech disc exploring the music of the appropriately named Gottfried Finger is noteworthy. Finger was a viol player and composer, born in Moravia probably in the early 1650s. His career was fully international, taking him to London, Berlin, Innsbruck, and a variety of German cities; late in his career he landed in Mannheim and helped lay the foundations of the crack orchestra later exploited by the Bohemian Karl Stamitz. The music here dates from the first part of his career, before 1700, and it features the viola da gamba of Czech player Petr Wagner, solo and accompanied with various combinations of players (on such instruments as theorbo, archlute, and Baroque guitar) from his handpicked Ensemble Tourbillon.Tracklist:
Many fine releases of early music have come from Eastern Europe in recent years, but few could be called state-of-the-art. This one merits the designation. It covers a style epoch that has been undergoing intensive exploration: the flashy, daring chamber music of the middle German Baroque. A primary influence here is Heinrich Biber, better known for his violin music but audible in spirit here. The genres represented are the sonate and balletti dance suites of Biber's small-ensemble music, with sequences of very short contrasting movements. And if Finger's music does not contain the "pizarren Sachen" (bizarre things) that Biber's patron loved and that have led to an explosion in the composer's popularity, it does share a dramatic quality with Biber's style. The original meanings of the word "Baroque" seem apposite here, with ornate, irregular instrumental lines rising from harmonically static accompaniments in the slow movements and sparkling detail in the faster ones. Wagner has the virtuoso instrumental lines under full control, and the quality of the sound from Prague's Arta label is top-notch. The music is recorded with a startling, close-up immediacy, with plenty of breath noise, as is a trend with gamba music. Anyone who has been hooked by Biber's Mystery Sonatas, or even by Vivaldi's wilder flights of imagination, will find this disc of interest. - James Manheim, All Music Guide
