The music on this album gets breathtakingly beautiful at times. I wonder why I've never heard of somebody who was that good.
Oh, don't forget to click on the cover.

The French composer Mel Bonis (1858-1937) was born into a modest Parisian middle-class family. Nothing predisposed her to a musical destiny — her passion for music was unique to her. After having taught herself to play the piano, Melanie obtained her parents' permission to take music lessons. Through her talent and determination, she met the right people and it was none other than Cesar Franck who opened the doors of the Paris Conservatoire to her in 1876. She made dazzling progress in the classes for harmony, piano accompaniment and composition, headed by the teachers Guiraud and Bazille, sharing the benches with Pieme and Debussy. After three years of study, she won first prize for harmony and a second prize for accompaniment, at which time her parents decided to force her to leave the Conservatoire to break off her love affair with a young and brilliant singer, Amedee Heald, who would make his fame as a music critic and singing teacher. Melanie entered into a marriage of convenience and became the wife of a rich Parisian industrialist, Albert Domange. She took care of a large family and was in charge of many household servants. It was in this context, still far removed from the world of music, that she soon rediscovered her passion for composition, a passion heightened by her hypersensitivity, inspired by her unrequited love and embellished by her boundlessly moral and mystical Christian personality. Melanie chose to compose under the name of Mel Bonis – a pseudonym devoid of female connotation. She left many works, around three hundred pieces in which practically all musical genres are covered: arias, choral music, piano pieces, organ music, chamber music (including a certain number of masterpieces, such as the quartets and sonatas), and orchestral works. This work, in the Post Romantic style, is characteristic of its era. It is extremely varied, swinging from drama to humour; it is often hearty and sensual and exhibits oriental wanderings; and is always superbly and most sensitively written. The writing is individualistic and easily identifiable by the originality of the harmonies and rhythms. Between 1900 and 1910, the composer experienced a certain fame on the Parisian musical scene: her music was performed within the Societe Nationale de Musique; she won two competitions held by the Societe des Compositeurs de Musique; and, uniquely for a woman, she became the secretary of the aforementioned society. Her music was performed in salons, at the Concerts du Conservatoire and at the Chatelet. The eminent musicians of the time speak of her music with respect and admiration: "I never would have thought a woman capable of writing that," said Camille Saint-Saens, referring to her first quartet, "she knows all the tricks of the trade." However, in the last part of her life, Mel Bonis was physically and psychologically depressed. Competition from modern composers affected Post-Romantics considerably. She continued to compose but in the shadows. Hence, she wrote in her memoirs: "My greatest sorrow: never to hear my music." In similar fashion to the rest of her works, Mel Bonis's compositions for the piano are highly varied. Her
piano works alone are comprised of around sixty pieces, picturesque pieces, concerto pieces, dances, and those from the "Women of Legend" collection. For piano four-hands, she wrote two suites of waltzes, "Valses Caprices" and "Suite en Forme de Valses," a "Suite dans le Style Ancien," "Songe de Cleopatre" and several works known as "salon pieces." For two pianos four-hands, she left us a Scherzo and some variations. Finally, she published five collections of educational pieces. This third album of Mel Bonis's piano pieces is comprised of her complete four-hand works and seven pieces for solo piano. The four-hand pieces are for the greater part transcriptions by Mel Bonis herself of her pieces for orchestra or solo piano, with the exception of the "Valses Caprices," which were originally written for this arrangement.
