Pascal Dusapin is one of the leading personalities of French music today. From "Romeo and Juliette" to "To be sung", his operas have become an integral part of the repertoire. In 1992, he took on the myth of Medea and composed "Medeamaterial", a work which, as is often the case with Dusapin, admirably merges various artistic forms: music and lyricism, literature, history, philosophy, the whole on a text of Heiner Müller.
The question of the opera is the focal point of Pascal Dusapin's compositional preoccupations. It is what excites and buttresses the logic of the writing that pervades the course of his work and, above all, it is what for a long time already has set up the warp of its manifestation as the phantom image of the real or fictitious representation in force throughout his work. Thus, Pascal Dusapin's musical territory will present itself as the emblematical setting of the relationship between sound, word and dramaturgy, even when this setting does not necessarily plead in favor of an operatic stage work.
The composer explains that the first task was "to analyze Heiner Müller's text in order to deduct its musical dramaturgy, particularly the form of the literary sense, the development of Medea's discourse, the rhetoric, the prosody and the construction of the sentences. I also had to construct a coherent harmonic plan with regard to the temperament without unbalancing the relationships to the melodic design. I am familiar with micro-intervals. I therefore concentrated on the extreme harmonic wealth obtained by the scalar differences between the sharp and the flat modes - in baroque temperament the sharp is lower than the flat! I had to direct the vertical and horizontal relations, because I was virtually prohibited any choice as regards volume due to the nature of the material. So much for the abstract level. Aurally it was more complex in so far as I had to take into account the inequality of the intervals. It was necessary to find a just compromise between my desire to differentiate the sharps and the flats and the temperament proper to Purcellian tonalities".
