Rachmaninov - Kharitonov, Andsnes - Songs (1999)
Dimitri Kharitonov gets this recital off to a line start with his gentle, intimate singing of one of Rachmaninov's most touching songs, 'To the children'. This cradle song of a kind (for the children are now old and have flown the nest) is really a woman's song, but it is sung with the elegance of line and the careful attention to words and their phrasing which mark the whole recital. The melismas of 'Sing not to me' are also beautifully phrased, and the more reflective songs gain much from this quiet, intelligent approach to their nature and meaning. Kharitonov is also fortunate in his pianist: Leif Ove Andsnes is undaunted by some of Rachmaninov's most ferocious demands, as in 'Anon', and can meet these without drowning his singer. This is a constant risk, for in louder passages Kharitonov can force his tone and cause problems. He does his best with Rachmaninov's only humorous song, Were you hiccoughing, Natasha? (though I think we could do without the gratuitous final 'hic'), but it is a pity that he felt obliged to include 'Fate'. Set to an Apukhtin poem and based on Beethoven's so-called 'Fate' theme from the Fifth Symphony, as the insert-note says, 'only an artist of Chaliapin-like incisiveness can make the song convincing'. Kharitonov is really a lyrical singer rather than a powerfully dramatic one, and he is no Chaliapin. What he does well on this recital, he does very well; and for that it can be enjoyed.
