...there is an element of anarchy in the music of Normandeau (b. 1955)... It appears here in a piece like Jeu de langues, which uses breaths and whispers and sounds like a piece of erotic sound art — a genre that hardly exist (which Normandeau finds odd, since its regular to be found in literature, painting and cinema). It’s easily nicest piece on this CD.
This CD culls works realized between 2005 and 2011, a very fine harvest. I am particularly fond of Jeu de langues made mostly out of inspirations edited from recordings of wind instrument players (the piece is sensual in a troubling way) and Anadliad, consisting of bagpipes, pibgorn, and the winds of Wales. And let’s not forget Palimpseste, the last (finally!) installment in the Onomatopées cycle started in (gasp!) 1991. Some very good electroacoustic music, thoughtful, masterful, and moving.
