We've seen plenty about the massive earthquake that struck Sichuan, China at 14:28 on May 12, 2008 through the cameras of the mainstream media, but Mainland Chinese documentary filmmaker Du Haibin offers another side of the story in his candid coverage of the disaster and its aftermath. Winning Best Documentary at the 66th Venice Film Festival, 1428 observes with cold eyes the absurd and tragic reality of post-quake Sichuan in Du's full-scope, multi-threaded narrative, baring the frailty of human nature in the process. Edited by Mary Stephen - a frequent collaborator of French auteur Eric Rohmer - the film first takes us to ground zero in the 10 days after the great earthquake amidst the public grief and rescue efforts. In the second half, the film flashes forward to 200 days after as we follow the lives of some survivors in the cold, harsh winter of Sichuan.

An Italian grand requiem written around the axle of the 19th and 20th centuries might almost be predictable. It will be operatic. It will doff the hat to Verdi. It will have its vulgar moments. It will be recorded by an Italian orchestra on an Italian label like Dynamic, Bongiovanni, Aura or Nuova Era. Wrong, in this case, on most counts…..This is commendable revival. A requiem in which the Fauré-like reticence of plainchant meets the drama of apocalyptic visions.

Linda Blair plays Carol, a young woman who must serve 18 months in prison after killing a man (by accident). The prison turns out to be brimming with decadence, corruption and sleaze, where the other female inmates are sadistic crack-selling lesbian rapists and the guards and warden are no better. Racial tensions are high as the inmates is divided into two factions, blacks and whites, who must either join together against the management or kill each other trying. A sleazy blend of sexploitation and blaxploitation make this movie a real winner.

Wolfgang Rihm has had a long and varied career, which Hanssler's Rihm Edition aims to document by exploring the archives of German radio orchestras. This disc here focuses on the period when he first came to prominence in the European contemporary music scene. In the 1970s, Rihm was writing in an effusive expressionistic style, often going with the white-hot inspiration of any given moment instead of an elaborate preconceived form. Paul, the owner of a topless go-go bar on the Sunset Strip, isn't having a good day. His girlfriend, unbeknownst to him, is planning to rob his club, and his wife is having an affair with the hunky bartender.

We follow a bunch of high school kids through a period in their puberty. Their lives mainly consist of watching the girls in the shower and making life a living hell for their teachers and for each other. The movie is packed with practical jokes and eccentric characters, like Pee Wee with the short dick (which he measures every morning) who met up for sex with the school "mattress" Wendy already wearing a rubber, or the fat teaching bitch Beulah Balbricker who is determined on making life a living hell for the boys.

In the grand tradition of MTV's Unplugged series, MTV Unplugged in Athens features German hard rock stalwarts Scorpions putting on an all-acoustic set for the good people of Greece. Rather than the intimate studio performances that put the series on the map in the '90s, however, the set was recorded at the Lycabettus Theatre in Athens, a setting that feels appropriately grand given the band's arena-rocking tendencies. Despite the larger venue, the set still feels fairly personal, stripping away the bombast of the plugged-in versions to reveal the emotions at the core of the band's…
