Since reading a couple of novels written in Biblical times, this has been a fairly new genre for me. So far, I haven’t been disappointed with it, and Palace of Darkness has only encouraged me to look for more books set in this time. Tracy L. Higley created characters that make excellent tour guides into the stone city. While it is hard to fully imagine living in a city carved out of rock, this book made a great attempt to breathe a bit more life into it.

Again Jackie Weger comes through! Good story as always, great character development. Towards the end of the book, no, I'm not going to quote it nor give it away there was a scene that made me sit back and realize that THIS MOMENT occurs, or should occur, in every person's life. It caused me to take stock of MY life and change the way I view some events that took place in my life.

My son who is ten years old enjoyed the book. As a parent too I was happy that it was a realistic story and exposes some of the bullying threats that may happen in a school in not the typical simplistic way but with all the complexities of life and friendship and then it had a good ending where the characters made the right choices… it also deals with the theme of being a new kid in an unfamiliar school. The ninja element of course created all the excitement, and I liked the little bit of fantasy feel that the book has.

She is rescued after a mishap by Riker, to whom she is immediately drawn. The two begin to develop feelings for one another very quickly, but both have some major baggage to overcome.

Angel and Thomas were great characters! I loved the mystery surrounding Angel. It kept me turning pages quickly. Plus, with the suspense, and thrill of the run, I kept holding my breath hoping that she would survive! Thomas was such a funny character. He kept the story entertaining, and even though this story did not focus on romance, there still was an element of it between these two characters. I think Tabula Rasa would be a great story for the big screen!

There were a few parts in the plot that did not work for me for instance there is a point in the story where what a musket ball is made of is important to the story and unless I am mistaken they are usually made of lead. Towards the end, without giving the plot away, there is one character who turns out to be something different to how they are portrayed throughout the book unfortunately this also means that they would have known a lot of the things that they were supposedly trying to find out.

One of my favorite authors, she's still coming up with interesting and new plots. I did get a little tired of re-reading the "angst" of the hero/heroine every few chapters, but I loved how believable she made Bijou. I could so sympathize with her childhood, and it was very believable to me that every one thinks of her as being "haughty" when in reality she was shy and unsure. And who doesn't want to be loved for themselves?
