Murdering Oscar (And Other Love Songs) is the second solo album by Patterson Hood. The album's songs were written from 1994 to 2004, and recording began in early 2005 in Athens, Georgia. Murdering Oscar was released on June 23, 2009 on Hood's own label, Ruth St. Records, and on ATO Records. The music consists of guitar chords and reverb on some tracks, while others also feature piano. The lyrics address topics that affected Hood around the time Murdering Oscar's songs were written, such as the birth of his child and his success with the Drive-By Truckers.

For those uninitiated into the world of Baroque or harpsichord music, be forewarned: this budget-priced trio of CDs from Archiv is a hefty amount of Bach on the harpsichord. These are reissues of recordings of Bach's greatest keyboard works made in the early '80s by Trevor Pinnock. While you may be able to listen to nearly four straight hours of Bach, some may find it hard to listen to the harpsichord for that long.

This is a very fine set of Mozart's "complete" wind concertos, though Deutsche Grammophon does not make that claim, to their credit. The Flute Concerto #2 is not here, though that work is simply a lazy reworking of the Oboe Concerto. Some fragments for horn are also missing, though we get the Andante for Flute. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra plays very well throughout, with instrumentals carefully and beautifully balanced.

Renewing a partnership with Brass Construction's Randy Muller that was forged when the two played in the early-'70s group Panharmonics, Rafael Cameron released his solo debut on Salsoul in 1980. Backed by an uncredited Funk Deluxe (the instrumental alias of funk band Skyy, which was also produced by Muller), Cameron unleashed an exuberant, joyful fusion of funk underpinned by disco-inflected soul. Cameron brought a vivacity to the genre that had been missing in the onslaught of sub-disco bands that had glutted the marketplace. Both "Magic of You," which gave Cameron a Top 20 hit, and "Together" are lengthy dance grooves, divided into movements that break the pace but keep the flow.

For his forthcoming sixth CD, "Mostly in Blue," he expanded to a quartet, with pianist Keith Saunders, to shake up his approach a bit but also in the interests of being true to the music he was hearing in his head.
