    Genre: Classical | Label: Supraphon

The Advent and Christmas songs from the workshop of Zuzana Lapčíková reflect perhaps all her musical positions known to date (as a singer and cimbalom player with a penchant for seeking inspiration in jazz and across genres). Yet the Christmas high-spiritedness is frequently supplemented by intimate chamber mood, humility and solemnity. Besides several sprightly “catchy” pieces, she often soberly makes use of the superlative co-players of her jazz quintet for tranquil duets. Her singing is the golden thread accompanying us throughout – a singing sharing pure joy, elsewhere humility before the Creator and evoking the silent tenderness with which the Virgin Mary looks upon the Infant.

New recordings from Supraphon’s Gramophone Editor’s Choice winning series “Music From 18th Century Prague” Unlike the copiously preserved sacred music, instrumental works by Czech composers in the Prague of the first third of the 18th century are as scarce as hen’s teeth. The twenty or so instrumental pieces by Antonín Reichenauer are among the most significant. Reichenauer was a musician in Count Morzin’s chapel, in which he assumed the role of in-house composer after Johann Friedrich Fasch. The ensemble’s superb quality is documented by the Count’s regular contacts with Antonio Vivaldi, whom he engaged as his “maestro di musica in Italia”.

The great B minor Cello Concerto of Antonín Dvorák remains, more than 115 years after its composition, one of the cornerstones of the cello repertoire and by far the most successful of all Dvorák's concertos. Much less known is the Cello Concerto in A major – Dvorák's first – that was written some 30 years prior to the B minor. The A major was composed as a gift, one Dvorák did not have opportunity to rework as he aged or to orchestrate himself. Lost and forgotten until the 1920s, the First Concerto has been subjected to many different orchestrations, cuts, and versions.

Ever newer chapters from the history of the bountiful musical life of Baroque Prague are still being discovered today. Until recently, František Jiránek, a composer and violinist of the Prague-based Count Morzin's chapel, had only been known to a select few. Now, for the first time, all lovers of old music are afforded the opportunity to listen to an exquisite collection of his virtuoso concertos. At first hearing, we can recognise inspiration by Vivaldi (combined with distinct elements of Czech musicality) - after all, Jiránek was sent by his employer to study in Venice, where most likely Antonio Vivaldi himself, at the time Morzin's "maestro di musica in Italia", was his teacher.

Josef Suk began writing the funeral symphony Asrael to commemorate his teacher and father-in-law Antonín Dvořák. During the course of work, however, Fate dealt him another crushing blow: Asrael, the Angel of Death, took away Suk’s wife and Dvořák’s daughter, Otilie. The symphony is a story of a suffering whose strength seems simply unendurable, yet also a story of its overcoming, seeking solace and hope.

Seven CD clamshell boxed set featuring a selection of recordings made at five concerts recorded between November 1976 and June 1983 by different incarnations of the sonic pioneers. The first two concerts recorded in Nottingham in November 1976 and Washington in April 1977 feature the legendary line-up of Edgar Froese, Chris Franke and Peter Baumann. The latter concert was broadcast live on FM radio as part of a US Tour that spawned the live album 'Encore'. The 1978 concert in Hamburg featured a short-lived line-up which featured Froese and Franke joined by vocalist and flautist Steve Jolliffe and drummer Klaus Krieger. The concert at Newcastle City Hall in October 1981 was part of the tour to promote the album 'Exit' and featured the trio of Edgar Froese, Chris Franke and Johannes Schmoelling. In 1983 this line-up performed a memorial concert in Frankfurt for the German film director Rainer Fassbinder who had passed away the previous year. The nature of Tangerine Dream's music meant that improvisation was a key factor in their live performances, making each performance unique. This makes these recordings so fascinating.

Fabio Biondi’s immense curiosity for characterful music – especially of forgotten scores from the Baroque – yields another fabulous surprise with Francesco Feo’s oratorio San Francesco di Sales. Feo’s reputation is at last starting to wax after having waned dramatically in the nineteenth century and thenceforward: in his own age he was compared very highly with Bach and Handel, and Charles Burney was moved to describe his vocal music as being “full of fire and invention and force in the melody and expression of the words”; Feo was also a boon companion of Pergolesi.

With various record labels compiling complete works to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the death of Bach, EMI's more accessible approach is this luxurious anthology of the Baroque master's sacred music. Over two and a half hours, this program encompasses the grand scale of the Magnificat in D (BWV 243) and Missa Brevis in A (BWV 234). Between these are scared cantatas, the very popular choral Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (BWV 140) contrasting with sensitive solo vocal writing in Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen (BWV 12); motets; arias; and an organ prelude and fugue. It's a well-balanced program, covering every aspect of Bach's church music except the Passions.

The musical world of the eighteenth-century court at Dresden is characterised by its diversity: Vivaldi, Hasse, Ristori and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach were all highly esteemed. The Zürcher Barockorchester perform selections from this demanding repertoire and successfully transport listeners to Dresden’s vibrant Augustan era.

Limited 10 CD box set. The first-ever CD box set gathering the entire 10 album collection released by Brian Eno's Obscure Records. Originally issued between 1975 and 1978, nearly 50 years on the output of Obscure remains radically forward-thinking - offering glimpses of a future yet to be fully seen - and amounts to one of the most important, influential, and creatively accomplished album series ever conceived. Curated by Eno and the composers Gavin Bryars and Michael Nyman - issuing the recording debuts of Bryars, Nyman, John Adams, Christopher Hobbs, David Toop, Max Eastley, Jan Steele, Simon Jeffes / The Penguin Café Orchestra, and Harold Budd, in addition to important works by John Cage, Tom Phillips, and John White - Obscure's collective output is a groundbreaking landmark in the histories of Minimalism, modern composition, and Experimental music, and laid much of the groundwork for the soon to emerge movement of Ambient music. Illuminating the remarkable, and largely otherwise undocumented, creative ferment within and between the British and American scenes of experimental music during the mid to late 1970s. Offering each of Obscure's albums, completely remastered and housed in faithful replicas of their original covers and liner notes, as well as a booklet filled with rare photos, archival material and texts by - among others - Gavin Bryars, Bradford Bailey, David Toop, Max Eastley, Richard Bernas, and Tom Recchion, this historic collection marks the first time this seminal series has received a complete reissue.

Like his compatriot and close contemporary Abdullah Ibrahim, Hugh Masekela has a 24-carat discography which stretches back six decades and digs deep into the taproot of jazz. Ibrahim is still with us—he has a new album scheduled for June 2019—but Masekela passed in January 2018. Among the several solid Masekela compilations on the market, this 3-CD set is the most welcome. It deals with the most prolific phase of Masekela's career and brings back into circulation material from landmark albums which have either never been reissued or which were last reissued twenty or thirty years ago. Two of the most important albums—Introducing Hedzolleh Soundz (Chisa/Blue Thumb, 1973) and I Am Not Afraid (Chisa/Blue Thumb, 1974)—are included in their entirety. If Masekela '66—'76 did no more than make these titles available again it would justify its existence. But it does much more.
