This is the story of Phaéton, valiant driver of the Sun’s chariot, led here by Vincent Dumestre and Benjamin Lazar, armed with a rich acquaintance of two decades of Lullyist cooperation. Just like at the time, they will make the Versailles Opera resonate with this production of this flamboyant tragédie lyrique which was first presented in Perm in Russia in 2018.

Vivaldi's many cello concertos are performed here with consummate taste and superb musicality by Roel Dieltiens and the Ensemble Explorations. Dieltiens plays with a rich tone and a light touch and his robust virtuosity and enthusiastic sympathy for the music are irresistible. The seven members of the Ensemble Explorations – five strings plus lute or guitar and organ or harpsichord – play with a sense of cooperation, which leaves this music sounding as concertos from the period should, which is to say more like chamber music.

The programme chosen for this CD by the eminent early music specialist Rinaldo Alessandrini and performed by members of his hand-picked ensemble Concerto Italiano illustrate most of the forms that instrumental music adopted in the course of the seventeenth century. Amongst the composers featured are Giovanni Gabrieli, Frescobaldi, Zanetti, and Torelli, as well as lesser known figures of the period including Giovanni de Macque, Evaristo dall’Abaco, and Giovanni Bononcini.

Following the demise of The Sex Pistols, Malcolm McLaren formed Bow Wow Wow in 1980 from former members of Adam And The Ants and a 14-year-old Myint Myint Aye (Burmese for "High High Cool"), who was spotted singing while working a Saturday job at her local dry cleaners, and soon renamed Annabella Lwin. Bow Wow Wow found early success with their Burundi-style drumming, pop melodies, surf instrumentals and Annabella Lwin's screams, chants and girlish squeals. But their notoriety soared due to the controversy surrounding Lwin's age, and the fact that she was featured naked on the band's first LP in 1981. Soon to be touring the States and opening for bands of the likes of the Pretenders and the Police, Bow Wow Wow soon released a plethora of singles, many of which came in numerous formats including cassettes, 7 inches, 12 inches and flexi-discs, with many containing alternative versions, b-sides, and remixes - all of which are included here on Your Box Set Pet: The Complete Recordings 1981-1984. Contains the albums See Jungle! See Jungle! Go Join Your Gang Yeah, City All Over! Go Ape Crazy! (1981), When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going (1983), the EP Your Cassette Pet (1980), plus all of the band's singles, b-sides, remixes and rarities.

It is commonly perceived that the essence of the New York Dolls was never satisfactorily captured by their two albums for the Mercury label, both of which many believe suffered from unsympathetic production. Fortunately for us all, the band's untutored rawness, unencumbered strength of purpose and unique vision is better served by the recordings that are gathered together for the first time on Personality Crisis: Live Recordings & Studio Demos 1972-1975. A trio of pre-Mercury demo sessions - arguably as close as the Dolls ever got to nailing their sound in the cold austerity of the recording studio - are joined by a collection of incendiary live shows (including two American radio broadcasts) that, despite the variable sound quality, capture their unfettered outrageousness and life-affirming vitality.

Somethin' Groovy! does the exact opposite of all those late-'60s vocal albums that charted the course of new '60s pop and rock with a big-band backing. Instead, producer David Cavanaugh and music director Ralph Carmichael drape a set of vocal standards ("Makin' Whoopee," "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby," "It Might as Well Be Spring," "Love Is Here to Stay") over a soft, gauzy, quintessentially '60s backing. Lee's voice is generally in good shape for these songs, and she treats them with even more laidback charm than listeners would expect. It's difficult to escape the impression, however, that excessive tinkering with the arrangements ruins Lee's performances; her duet with harmonica player Toots Thielemans on "Makin' Whoopee" is interesting, but so disjointed and loose that it's more camp than quality. The ballads "I Can Hear the Music," "Love Is Here to Stay," and "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby" are done much better, but Somethin' Groovy! is an unfortunate album, finding a solid vocal performance trapped in time by weak arrangements and flaccid productions.

Stravinsky, Bartók and Martinů were established international figures when they wrote these works for violin, travelling across Europe as well as the United States. With the onset of World War Two, all three composers would ultimately emigrate because of their rejection of fascism. In an age of political upheaval and cultural displacement, each of them found an individual approach to reinventing the language of tonal music, laying down roots in the west without abandoning their Eastern European identities.

In April and May 1954, Herbert von Karajan visited Japan for the first time as a guest conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra. He conducted sixteen concerts with them – two of which were for broadcast only (one for television, the other radio) – and the rest were public concerts given in Tokyo, Nagoya and Kyoto.

With the rise of Romanticism, the topics of opera changed from the mythological fantasy of Baroque operas to the fairytale fantasy which graced the French stage long before Romanticism reached other European nations. Initiated by the Palazzetto Bru Zane, this project is built like a universal fairytale, inspired by Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Bluebeard, and others, as set to music by French composers of the Romantic period, alternating between famous composers such as Offenbach and Rossini and little known masters like Viardot, Silver, and Isouard. This imaginary opera was conceived and transcribed by Alexandre Dratwicki for piano quartet and two singers- a soprano and a mezzo, the roles of which are performed here by Jodie Devos and Caroline Meng.

Pure… Singer/Songwriter is a brave album that showcases strong song writing, sometimes by avoiding the artists most prominent work in lieu of a lesser known piece. Simon & Garfunkel, John Denver, Lou Reed, Bob Marley, Van Morrison, George Michael and Bruce Hornsby are all represented by one of their better known tracks. However, Bowie, Hall & Oates, Alicia Keys, Nillson and even Sarah Bareilles are represented but obscure tracks. As well as the well known artists this compilation also goes back to includes lesser known artists from the 60s and 70s such as Colin Blunstone, Laura Nyro and Phoebe Snow.
